What is quilt backing?
As the name suggests, a quilt backing is the fabric used on the back of a quilt. It provides a backing and adds stability to the quilting project. Moreover, it is the last layer of the quilt.
How do you create a quilt backing?
Creating a quilt backing is a straightforward four-step process. Below is the detailed approach for any project.
Select Fabric
When selecting a fabric for the quilt backing, look for a durable fabric that complements other fabrics used in the project. Moreover, you should choose lightweight fabrics for the backing, as batting fabric is already heavier.
Measure the Quilt
The size of the quilt backing is dependent on the quilt top. Once you measure the quilt top, add more length and width and cut the fabric back correctly.
Piece the backing
You can also piece the backing if you did not measure the top correctly and your backing material is less than the entire top. To do so, you can either match patterns at the seam for better designs or do simple seam placements.
Press
Once the backing is applied and stitched, press all seams and backing to reduce bulkiness and create a better quilting area.
What are the common quilting fabrics?
Cotton
Cotton is one of the most popular choices for quilting backing as it is soft, lightweight, and highly durable. Moreover, it is pretty easy to take care of cotton, and you can keep it clean, too.
Muslin
Muslin is a soft and unbleached cotton fabric. You can use this fabric in quilt backing pretty easily.
Flannel
Consider flannel if you want a quilting backing fabric resistant to colder climates. It is a thicker and warmer fabric that supports quilting projects.
