Which fold for which project
The fold is the decision most people skip and then regret, because it determines how the label attaches and how much of it you actually see.
- Straight cut. A flat label, cut on all four sides, stitched down around the whole edge. Use it when the label sits on the surface: the outside of a bag, the front of a cushion, a patch pocket. Nothing is hidden, so the whole design shows.
- Centre fold. Folded once through the middle with both ends open, caught in a seam so the fold forms a loop. The standard for a neck label or a side seam. You sew the two open ends into the seam and the folded edge stays clean.
- End fold. Both short ends fold under and the label lies flat. Use it where you want a flat label with no raw edge, stitched along the two folded ends. Common on the inside of a waistband or a neckline.
- Manhattan fold. Ends folded under and then the whole label folded in half, so it reads from both sides. Use it in a side seam or a hem where the label hangs out and both faces are visible.
All sizes we quote are finished sizes, meaning what you see once the label is folded. A centre fold or end fold label is cut larger before folding and production allows for that automatically, so order the size you want to see in the finished piece.
How to sew a label in
Sew on labels attach in under a minute once the piece is ready, and Super Label Store supplies them hot cut so the edges are already sealed.
Straightforward, but the timing matters more than the technique.
Add the label while the seam is still open. A centre fold label is caught in a seam, which means it has to go in before you close that seam. Sewing one in afterwards means unpicking, and on a lined or bagged-out piece it can mean unpicking a lot. Decide on your label placement at the cutting stage, not at the finishing stage.
Machine or hand, both work. By machine, pin or clip the label in place and stitch along the edge with a straight stitch, backstitching at both ends. A standard universal needle handles woven polyester without difficulty. By hand, a small slip stitch or whip stitch around the edge is invisible and secure.
Allow for the seam. If a centre fold label is going into a 1 cm seam allowance, the part inside the seam is not visible. Order the finished size you want to see, and place the label so the open ends sit inside the allowance and the fold sits outside it.
Press before, not after. Press the piece flat before you attach the label. A crease under a stitched-down label is permanent.
Test on a scrap. On stretch fabrics especially. A woven label does not stretch, so stitching one across a knit that needs to give will restrict it. Place labels on stable areas: seams, waistbands, facings, not the middle of a jersey panel.
Where to put a sewing label
- Back neck, inside. The classic placement for garments. Centre fold, caught in the neckline seam or the facing.
- Side seam, near the hem. Discreet, easy to insert, and the most forgiving placement if you are new to it. Centre fold or Manhattan fold.
- Inside a waistband. End fold, stitched flat.
- Outside, as a design element. Straight cut, stitched on all four sides. Common on bags, cushions, totes and children's clothing.
- Bag lining or interior pocket. Straight cut on a flat panel, added before the lining is assembled.
- Soft toys and plush. Caught in a seam, usually at the back or the base, before stuffing.
Sew on or iron on?
Sew on is the more durable of the two and the right choice for anything that will be washed regularly or worn hard. It is also the only sensible option for a centre fold label, since the point of that fold is to be caught in a seam.
Iron on uses a heat-activated backing and needs no stitching, which suits quick projects, straight cut labels and anyone without a machine. The bond softens over many hot washes, so for a garment washed weekly we recommend stitching the edge as well. The adhesive holds the label perfectly still while you sew, which makes stitching easier than pinning.
Combination backing irons on and can also be stitched, which is the belt-and-braces option.
Avoid iron-on entirely on stretch knits, waterproof technical fabrics, leather and anything heavily textured. The adhesive needs a flat, stable surface to bond to.

Designing a sewing label that reads well
Every sewing label from Super Label Store is woven in damask on a jacquard loom, so the design is built from thread rather than printed on top. What that means for your design:
- Text weaves cleanly down to about 2 mm in width. On a 1.5 inch label that is comfortable for a name, workable for a name plus "handmade", and tight for three lines.
- Bold sans-serif reads best. Script fonts look right on a handmade piece but lose their thin strokes in thread, so choose a heavier script rather than a fine one.
- Up to 8 thread colors. Gradients, shadows and photographs cannot be woven and are simplified to solid colours.
- If the design will not simplify, go bigger. A 2 inch label holds detail a 1 inch label cannot.
You do not need artwork to start. The design tool lets you build a label from fonts, icons and colours in the browser, or you can upload a logo in JPG, PNG, AI, PSD, INDD or PDF.

That two-minute check catches almost everything: text too small to read, a label too wide for the seam it is meant to sit in, a name that runs to the edge. It is far cheaper than finding out after 50 labels have been woven. If your printer scaling is slightly off, adjust the print percentage until the printed label matches the dimensions shown on the proof.
What to put on a sewing label

- Name plus a phrase. Handmade with love, handmade in Portland, sewn by hand. Keep it to one short line alongside the name.
