Custom woven labels (UK) are fabric labels made by weaving coloured polyester yarn on a jacquard loom, so your logo becomes part of the fabric instead of being printed on top. These sew-in woven labels outlast the garment they are attached to, and the colours do not fade. Order from 5 pieces at £34, in sizes from 10 x 10 mm up to 300 x 300 mm.

  • From 5 to 100,000+ labels, no minimum order barrier for small brands
  • Sizes from 10 x 10 mm to 300 x 300 mm, fully custom, not fixed formats
  • Up to 8 colours per design, woven in 50, 75 or 100 denier
  • 8 to 12 working days standard, 4 to 8 working days with rush production
  • OEKO-TEX 100 certified polyester, with recycled PET available

What are custom woven labels?

Custom woven labels, also called woven tags, are made by weaving coloured polyester yarn on a jacquard loom. The design is built from the threads themselves, which is what separates a woven label from a printed one. A printed label carries ink on the surface of the fabric. A woven label is the fabric.

That difference shows up over time. The label outlasts the garment it is attached to, and the colours do not fade through washing, tumble drying or daily wear. Our hot cut edges seal the fabric so the label does not fray.

Every label is OEKO-TEX 100 certified, and recycled PET yarn is available if you want a lower-impact option without giving up durability.

Custom woven label sizes and placement

Our custom woven tags are made to your dimensions rather than sold in fixed formats. There are no fixed formats to choose from, so the woven label size follows the garment rather than the other way around.

Where the label goes usually determines the size:

Placement Typical use Suggested size (W x H)
Neck label Inside the back collar of t-shirts, hoodies, jackets 38 x 25 mm to 64 x 51 mm
Side seam label Sewn into the side seam, discreet branding 13 x 38 mm to 19 x 51 mm
Back label Larger branding on the outside back 51 x 51 mm to 102 x 102 mm
In-seam label Tucked into any seam, hidden until looked for 13 x 25 mm to 19 x 38 mm
Surface label Sewn on top of the fabric as a visible design element 38 x 51 mm to 51 x 76 mm
Inside label Anywhere on the inside of the garment 25 x 38 mm to 51 x 76 mm

In short: most UK brands order neck labels around 38 x 25 mm and side seam labels around 13 x 38 mm, but any dimension between 10 x 10 mm and 300 x 300 mm is possible.

All sizes above are finished sizes, meaning the visible label once folded. A centre fold or end fold label is cut larger before folding, and production allows for that automatically. Order the size you want to see in the garment.

Text weaves cleanly down to approximately 2 mm in width. If your design carries more than two lines of text, size up. Text that is too small for the label is the single most common reason a proof comes back for adjustment.

Woven size labels

A size label carries the garment size and nothing else: S, M, L, or a numeric size. Super Label Store weaves them the same way as brand labels, in the same damask, from 5 pieces per design.

Two ways to handle sizing, and the choice affects your order:

  • Separate size labels. One small label per size, sewn in alongside the brand label. Each size is its own design and carries its own minimum, so a run of S, M, L and XL is four designs. This is what most brands do once they sell more than one size.
  • Size on the brand label. The size is woven into the same label as your logo. One design, one minimum, but a separate version per size, so the count works out the same.

Woven size labels are usually small: 13 x 13 mm to 25 x 19 mm is the normal range. Text weaves cleanly down to about 2 mm, so a single letter or number reads well at that size. Bold sans-serif works best.

If you are launching a size run, order the free 1:1 proof for the largest and the smallest size in the set, print both, and check them against the garment before you commit.

Damask weaving and thread density

Our custom woven labels use a damask weave. Damask is a tightly woven structure that carries fine detail at small sizes, which is why it has been the standard for premium apparel brands for decades. The tight weave also produces a softer surface against the skin than looser constructions.

We weave in 50, 75 and 100 denier. Denier describes the thickness of the yarn: the finer the yarn, the more threads fit into the same space, and the more detail the label can hold.

Which denier we use depends on your design. A logo with fine lines, small text or intricate detail needs a finer yarn to reproduce cleanly. A simpler wordmark works well at a heavier denier, which produces a slightly firmer label. You do not need to choose this yourself. We select it based on the artwork you upload, and you see the result in the digital proof before production starts.

Fold styles

Fold How it works Best for
Straight cut Flat label, cut on all four sides Surface application, back labels, labels sewn on all sides
Centre fold Folded once in the middle, both ends open Neck labels and side seams, sewn in at the open ends
End fold Both short ends folded under, label sits flat Neck labels where you want a clean finish with no raw edge
Manhattan fold Ends folded under and the label folded in half Side seams and hems where the label needs to be double-sided

In short: centre fold for a label sewn into a seam, end fold or Manhattan fold for a label stitched flat onto the garment, straight cut for a label sewn down on all four sides.

Colours and design

You can use up to 8 colours in a single design. That is enough for most logos, wordmarks and icons.

If your artwork has more colours, gradients or photographic detail, we will tell you before production and suggest how to simplify it, or point you towards our printed care labels, where full-colour detail and small text are possible.

Accepted file formats

We accept almost all common file formats, including JPG, PNG, AI, PSD, INDD and PDF. For the fastest upload, JPG or PNG work best. Larger files such as AI, Photoshop, InDesign and PDF documents take longer to upload but are handled the same way.

Common reasons a proof needs adjusting:

  • Text is too small. Fine details below approximately 1.5 to 2 mm cannot be woven clearly.
  • Low colour contrast. Some combinations are hard to read, for example gold thread on a pink background.
  • Too many small details. Fine detail often needs to be simplified before it can be woven.
  • Photos cannot be woven. Images have to be converted into a simple graphic or illustration first.
  • No gradients or shadows. Woven labels use solid thread colours only, so colour fades and shading are not possible.
  • The label needs to be larger. If the design carries a lot of text or detail, a bigger label is often the fix.
  • Unsuitable font. Serif fonts and very thin lettering do not weave well. Sans-serif or bold fonts give the best results.

Application

  • Sew-on. The standard for sew-in labels, and the most durable option for garments that see heavy use.
  • Iron-on. A heat-activated backing that bonds without stitching, ideal for quick application.
  • Combination. Iron-on backing that you can also stitch, for maximum hold.

Designing woven labels online

You do not need a design file to get started. The Super Label Store woven label designer runs in your browser and lets you choose the size, fold, colours, backing and layout in one place.

There are two ways to create your label:

  • Upload your logo. JPG, PNG, AI, PSD, INDD and PDF files are all supported. JPG and PNG upload fastest. Every design is reviewed by our team before production.
  • Design from scratch. Build your label online by choosing fonts, icons, colours and layout, without uploading artwork.

Whichever option you choose, the designer generates a free 1:1 digital proof as a PDF. Print it on A4 paper, cut out the label and place it against your garment. It is the quickest way to check whether your design is readable at the selected size, and it only takes a couple of minutes.

If your printer scales the page slightly, adjust the print percentage until the printed label matches the dimensions shown on the proof.

Upload your logo or start from scratch in the design tool. You get a free digital proof as a PDF that you can print at actual size, so you can check the dimensions against your garment before placing the order.

Two ways to check your labels before production

Super Label Store offers two separate checks, and they answer different questions. Knowing which you need saves a reorder.

Digital proof: free, and it checks the size

Every woven label design produces a free digital proof as a PDF at scale 1:1, available under the order button. Download it, print it on A4, cut the label out and hold it against the garment. That tells you within two minutes whether 51 x 25 mm is right for your neck label, and whether your text is still readable at that size.

If your printer's scaling is slightly off, adjust the print percentage until the printed label matches the dimensions shown on the proof.

Photo proof: a paid option on woven labels

The photo proof costs £26 on woven labels, and there is a good reason for the surcharge. We weave a single sample label first, photograph it, and send you that photograph. Only once you approve it does the rest of the production run start.

That means an extra setup and an extra production step before your order proper begins, which is what the surcharge covers. Note that the photo proof is free on embroidered badges, so do not assume the same applies across the range.

It is worth taking when the design is detailed, when the run is large, or when an exact colour match matters. For a straightforward wordmark at a small quantity, the free digital proof is usually enough.

A photo proof also extends the lead time, because production waits for your response. Keep an eye on your email during that window.

Approve on the website, not by email

When you click Approve on the approval page, your approval goes straight to the production floor and the looms carry on immediately. Feedback sent by email has to be processed by a member of staff first, which adds a step and delays your order. Use the approval page for both approvals and changes wherever you can.

Who orders custom woven labels

  • Fashion brands and independent designers. Neck labels and side seam labels that finish a collection.
  • Handmade makers, knitters and quilters. Small businesses and Etsy sellers use a woven label to turn a handmade piece into a product.
  • Kidswear, school uniform and nurseries. Soft woven name labels that survive hundreds of wash cycles, sewn into uniform, PE kit and coats.
  • Care homes and healthcare. Sewn-in name labels that hold up to daily industrial laundry.
  • Accessories and boutique lines. Hats, scarves, bags and leather goods, often finished with embroidered badges.
  • Activewear and loungewear. Labels that hold up to sweat, stretch and frequent washing.

Most brands pair a woven label with a care label carrying the washing instructions and fibre composition, and a swing tag for the shop floor.

Frequently asked questions about custom woven labels

How much do custom woven labels cost in the UK?

Woven labels start at £34 for 5 pieces at the smallest size. The unit price drops sharply at higher quantities, and the design tool shows the price as you change the size and the quantity.

What is the minimum order for woven labels?

5 pieces per design. Most woven label suppliers in the UK start at 30, 100 or more, so a first run costs the price of a test rather than a year's supply. Each design carries its own minimum, so two different labels are two orders of at least 5.

What size should my woven label be?

Neck labels are usually 38 x 25 mm to 64 x 51 mm, side seam labels 13 x 38 mm to 19 x 51 mm. Any size between 10 x 10 mm and 300 x 300 mm is possible, because the labels are made to your dimensions rather than sold in fixed formats.

How small can the text on a woven label be?

Text weaves cleanly down to about 2 mm in width. Below that, fine detail closes up. If your design carries more than two lines of text, choose a larger label rather than smaller lettering.

What is the difference between woven and printed labels?

A woven label is built from coloured thread on a jacquard loom, so the design is the fabric and nothing can crack or fade. A printed label carries ink on the surface, which allows gradients, photographs and very small text. Woven is the standard for brand labels; printed suits care labels and complex artwork.

Can I have iron-on woven labels instead of sew-in?

Yes. Woven labels are available as sew-on, iron-on, or with a combination backing that you iron on first and then stitch down. For garments washed often and hot, sewing lasts longest.

Can I see my woven label before I order?

Yes. Every design comes with a free digital proof as a PDF at scale 1:1. Print it, cut it out and hold it against the garment. A photo proof, where we weave and photograph a sample first, is available on woven labels for £26.

How long does production take?

8 to 12 working days plus delivery, counted from the moment you approve your proof. Rush production takes 4 to 8 working days.

Do you deliver across the UK, and what does delivery cost?

We deliver throughout the United Kingdom, and delivery is free on orders over £175.

Are your woven labels OEKO-TEX certified?

Yes, every woven label is OEKO-TEX 100 certified, and recycled PET yarn is available if you want a lower-impact option without giving up durability.

Can I order woven name labels for school uniform?

Yes. Woven name labels are the same product with a name instead of a logo, from 5 pieces per name, and they survive the wash cycles that school uniform, PE kit and care home laundry put them through.
