A jacket is the largest surface most people ever put a patch on, and that changes the calculation. On a t-shirt a patch is a detail; on a jacket back it can be the whole design. That means bigger sizes, more detail to plan for, and artwork that has to hold up when someone sees it from across a street rather than across a table. It also means the fabric matters more, because denim, leather, nylon and wool each behave differently under heat and each take stitching differently. Inspiring custom jacket patches
Choose the backing by fabric, not by preference
Denim
The most forgiving jacket fabric. Iron-on bonds well to cotton denim, and the surface is flat enough for even contact. For a jacket that will be worn hard and washed often, stitch around the edge as well. The adhesive holds the patch perfectly in place while you sew, which makes stitching far easier than pinning.
Leather and faux leather
Never iron a patch onto leather. The heat an adhesive backing needs will scorch, shrink or permanently mark the hide, and the damage cannot be undone. Sew-on is the only sensible option. Most leather workers and alteration shops will attach a patch for a modest fee, and for a back panel that is money well spent.
Bomber jackets, nylon and satin
Nylon and technical shells melt at the temperatures an iron-on backing requires. Sew-on again. Satin bomber panels scorch and mark easily, so the same applies even where the fabric feels sturdy.
Varsity and wool melton
Wool does not take adhesive well and dislikes direct heat, so sew-on is the standard here too. Worth knowing: traditional varsity letters are chenille, a different technique that we do not produce. What we make for varsity jackets is embroidered patches, which suit chest logos, sleeve patches, year patches and back designs.
Fleece, knits and heavy texture
Adhesive needs a smooth flat surface to bond to, and a textured knit gives it too little contact. Sew-on.
The short version: denim can take iron-on, almost nothing else can. When in doubt, sew.

Placement and sizing
Super Label Store produces jacket patches from 1.5 to 9 inches. Where the patch goes decides the size more than anything else:
- Back panel: 6 to 9 inches. The statement piece. This is where detailed artwork and 100% coverage earn their cost, and where most of the visual impact of a patch jacket comes from.
- Chest, left or right: 3 to 4 inches. Logo, name or club mark. Sits above the pocket line.
- Small chest badge: 2 to 2.5 inches. Understated branding, roughly where a shirt pocket would be.
- Sleeve or shoulder: 3 to 4 inches. Flags, year patches, unit or team markers.
- Cuff or hem strip: around 1 x 4 inches. Text only.
Building a patch jacket with many small patches rather than one large one? Plan the layout on the actual jacket before ordering, using your printed digital proofs. Patches that look balanced on screen often crowd each other on a real garment.
Designing for thread rather than print
Jacket artwork is usually the most graphic of any patch category, which means it also breaks most often. Four rules:
- Text needs 3.5 to 4 mm of width per character. On a 9 inch back patch you have real freedom. On a 2.5 inch chest badge, a long name does not fit and the fix is a bigger patch, not smaller type.
- Gradients, fades and drop shadows cannot be embroidered. They become solid blocks of colour. Design flat from the start.
- Photographs have to be redrawn as a simplified illustration before they can be stitched.
- Bold sans-serif reads best. Thin and serif faces lose their fine strokes in thread.
Coverage changes the look substantially on a large patch. 100% coverage stitches the entire surface with no twill visible, which is what gives a back patch its density and weight. 50% leaves background fabric showing and costs least, which suits bold graphic designs where the twill colour is part of the artwork.
Merrow Border is the classic overlocked edge, around 5 mm wide, added around your design. It suits circles, shields and rectangles. Heat Cut follows your exact outline with a sharp sealed edge and is the option for irregular shapes, lettering-only designs and anything with inward corners.

Artwork and colors
For a patch cut to the shape of your design rather than a rectangle, upload a PNG with a transparent background. That lets the outline follow the artwork. A file with a white or colored background is usually read as a square. You can also select Custom Shape during ordering.
If brand colors have to be exact, enter your Pantone or other colour codes in the comments field. Without codes, the Super Label Store design team matches your artwork as closely as the thread range allows. Metallic gold and silver and neon threads are available as premium options; note in the comments where they should be applied.
Two proofs before the run is made
Digital Proof: free, downloadable under the order button. Print it at 1:1 on A4, cut it out and pin it to the jacket. On a back panel this matters more than anywhere else, because the difference between 7 and 9 inches is very hard to judge on screen and very obvious on a garment. Adjust the print percentage if your printer scaling is off.
Photo Proof: free on embroidery patches. Tick it during ordering at no extra cost and Super Label Store will produce one sample patch, photograph it and send it for approval before the rest of the run starts. Worth taking on a large back patch, where the artwork is most detailed and the piece is most visible.

We always do our utmost to meet the production time you choose. In exceptional cases production can be delayed by circumstances outside our control. If we miss a rush deadline, the $85 rush fee is refunded.
