How to apply iron-on patches
Applying custom iron-on patches for clothes takes under a minute per patch once the garment is ready. The whole process is seven steps.
- Preheat the iron to a medium-high, dry setting. Turn the steam off. Steam works against the adhesive.
- Prepare the garment. It must be clean, dry and pressed flat. Any crease under the patch becomes permanent.
- Position the patch face up on the fabric and check the placement before you apply heat. Once bonded, it does not move.
- Cover with a thin cloth such as a tea towel or pressing cloth, so the iron never touches the embroidery directly.
- Press firmly for 20 to 30 seconds. Hold steady pressure rather than moving the iron around, and press the edges as well as the centre.
- Let it cool completely before touching it. The adhesive sets as it cools, not while it is hot.
- Test an edge. If a corner lifts, press again for another 15 seconds through the cloth.

Iron-on backing bonds well to cotton, denim, canvas, twill and polyester blends, and bonds poorly to nylon, leather, fleece and stretch fabrics. Worth checking before you choose, because the wrong choice tends to be discovered at the worst possible moment.

Iron-on is a poor choice for:
- Nylon and waterproof technical fabrics. They melt at the temperatures the adhesive needs.
- Leather and vinyl. Heat damages the surface permanently.
- Heavy knits and fleece. The textured surface gives the adhesive too little flat contact.
- Stretch and performance fabrics. The bond cracks as the fabric moves.
- Anything washed at high temperature very frequently. Workwear and uniforms are better sewn.
Our honest recommendation: for garments that will be worn hard and washed often, stitch around the edge of the iron-on patch as well. The adhesive holds it perfectly in place while you sew, which makes stitching far easier than pinning, and the result is permanent.
