Custom military patches for units, uniforms and commemoratives

Custom military patches are embroidered insignia made to a unit's own artwork, supplied with velcro, sew-on or iron-on backing. Super Label Store produces them in any shape from 1.5 to 9 inches, from 10 pieces per design, with a free digital proof before anything is stitched.
Ten pieces is a real minimum. That matters here more than in most categories, because a squad, a detachment or a single deployment often needs a few dozen patches rather than a few thousand, and most suppliers in this space will not run an order that small

What most military patch orders are for

Four things account for the large majority of what we produce:

  • Unit insignia. Company, battalion, squadron or detachment artwork, usually worn on the shoulder or chest, often ordered for a whole roster at once.
  • Name tapes. Surname, branch or organisation, in a long narrow format. Every different name is a separate design, which has real consequences for how you order. See below.
  • Deployment and commemorative patches. Produced for a specific rotation, exercise or anniversary. Usually small runs, and usually the ones with the most detailed artwork.
  • Veteran and association patches. Post-service organisations, reunions, honour guards and legion posts.

Subdued or full colour?

his is the decision that most often has to be right the first time.

Subdued patches use low-contrast, muted thread colours so the insignia does not stand out at distance. This is what most duty uniforms call for, and the reason is functional rather than aesthetic.

Full colour patches are used on dress uniforms, unit jackets, commemoratives, association wear and display pieces, where visibility is the whole point.

Requirements differ by branch, by unit and by uniform, and they change over time. Confirm what your unit permits before you finalise artwork. We can produce either, and the free proof shows you exactly which thread colours were selected before production starts.

Name tapes: order this way or it gets expensive

Every distinct name is a distinct design, and each design carries its own minimum of 10 pieces. That is a production fact rather than a policy: the machine has to be set up separately for each one.

For a roster where every patch has a different surname, that means the maths does not work the way people expect. Ten patches of one name is one order. Twenty different names is twenty orders of ten.

If you are outfitting a unit with individual name tapes, request a quote and we will price the run directly rather than putting you through the standard configurator. That is the right route for anything with more than a handful of distinct names.

Backing: velcro or sewn

Most modern duty uniforms and plate carriers already carry loop panels, so single velcro is the usual answer. The patch has hook backing and presses straight on.

Choose double velcro when the garment has no loop panel. It comes with a separate loop piece you attach first. If you are ordering for a group and some gear has panels while some does not, order double: the spare loop piece is unused on gear that already has one, which costs less than discovering half the order cannot be attached.

Sew-on remains the most durable option and is the right choice for anything permanent, for dress uniforms, and for garments laundered industrially.

Full detail on the backing options is on our custom velcro patches page.

Sizing for uniform wear

Super Label Store produces military patches from 1.5 to 9 inches. These are the sizes ordered most often:

  • Name tape: 1 x 4 inches equivalent. Text only, bold lettering, no fine detail.
  • Shoulder or sleeve insignia: 3 to 4 inches. The standard for unit patches.
  • Chest or plate carrier patch: 2 to 3.5 inches. Sized to the loop field on the garment.
  • Cap or beret patch: 2 to 2.5 inches. Curved surfaces limit how much detail reads.
  • Back panel or commemorative: 6 to 9 inches. Where intricate heraldry and full coverage earn their cost.

Measure the loop panel on your gear before choosing a size. A patch sized to the panel sits flat and holds; one sized past it lifts at the corners.

What embroidery can and cannot reproduce

Military artwork often comes from heraldry originally drawn for print, and thread has different limits. Before you upload:

  • Text needs 3.5 to 4 mm of width minimum. Mottoes and unit designations in small type are the most common reason a proof comes back.
  • Gradients and shadows cannot be woven in thread. They become solid blocks of colour.
  • Fine heraldic detail usually needs simplifying, or a larger patch. A larger patch is almost always the better answer.
  • Up to 9 thread colours are included. Complex crests sometimes need reducing to fit.

If your artwork is not print-ready, send what you have. Our design team converts sketches, scans and old patch photographs into a production file at no cost, and you approve the result before anything is stitched.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are custom military patches?

Custom military patches are embroidered insignia produced to a unit's own artwork, used for unit identification, name tapes, deployments and commemoratives. They are stitched on a twill base and supplied with velcro, sew-on or iron-on backing depending on the uniform.

What is the minimum order for custom military patches?

The minimum at Super Label Store is 10 patches per design. Most suppliers in this category start at 50 or 100, which is impractical for a squad, a detachment or a single deployment.

How much do custom military patches cost?

Custom military patches at Super Label Store start at $97 for 10 pieces. Size, quantity, coverage and colour count drive the price, and the design tool updates as you change each one.

Can you make subdued patches?

Yes. Subdued patches use muted, low-contrast thread colours for duty uniforms, and full colour is used for dress uniforms, commemoratives and association wear. Requirements vary by branch, unit and uniform, so confirm what yours permits before finalising artwork.

Can I order name tapes with different names?

Yes, but each distinct name is a separate design carrying its own minimum of 10. For a roster of individual names, request a quote instead of using the configurator and we will price the run directly.

Which backing should I choose for a uniform?

Single velcro if the garment already has a loop panel, which most modern duty uniforms and plate carriers do. Double velcro if it does not, since that includes a loop piece to attach first. Sew-on for anything permanent or industrially laundered.

What sizes can I order?

Any shape from 1.5 to 9 inches. Name tapes are typically 1 x 4 inches equivalent, shoulder insignia 3 to 4 inches, plate carrier patches 2 to 3.5 inches, and commemorative back panels 6 to 9 inches.

How long does production take?

Standard production at Super Label Store is 8 to 12 business days plus shipping, counted from your approval of the digital proof rather than from the order date. Rush is 4 to 8 business days for $85 per design, available from 200 pieces.

Can you work from an old patch or a sketch?

Yes. Send a photograph of an existing patch, a scan or a rough drawing, and our design team converts it into a production file at no cost. This is the normal route for heritage and unit artwork rather than an exception.

Will the patches survive field use and laundering?

Yes. Polyester embroidery thread on a twill base is colourfast and holds up to heavy wear. Sew-on backing survives laundering best. Velcro patches are usually removed before washing, which is part of why they are standard on duty uniforms.
