Woven labels
The brand label at the neck or the side seam. The design is woven from coloured thread rather than printed, so nothing can crack, peel or fade. Any size from 10 x 10 mm to 300 x 300 mm, from 5 pieces per design at £34.
Swing Tags
The card tag that hangs from the garment, with your logo on the front and product details, a QR code or the price on the back. Printed full colour on both sides on 300 gsm matt board, 51 x 78 mm, from 100 pieces at £49. Also known as hang tags.
Care Labels
The label in the side seam carrying the washing instructions, laundry symbols and fibre composition. Printed on satin by thermal transfer, so the text stays legible through hundreds of washes, with welded edges that will not fray. From 100 pieces at £35.
Which clothing labels do you need?
Most garments carry two: a brand label that is meant to be seen, and a care label with the information you are required to give. A swing tag is usually added for the shop floor.
- Your brand at the neck: a woven label. Durable, soft, and it lasts as long as the garment.
- Washing instructions and fibre composition: a care label in the side seam. Small text sits better on a printed satin label than on a woven one.
- Price and presentation in store: a swing tag, cut off at the point of sale.
- Your logo on the outside: an embroidered badge on a jacket, cap or bag.
- The owner's name: a woven name label, for school uniform, nursery or a care home.
What has to go on a clothing label in the UK?
In the UK, fibre composition is the part that is legally required on textile products, under the Textile Products (Labelling and Fibre Composition) Regulations: the generic fibre names with percentages, in order of weight. For example 80% cotton, 20% polyester.
Washing instructions are not required by those regulations, but they are expected everywhere and are a condition for many retailers. Most brands use laundry symbols, because they work in every language. Country of origin and size are usually added as well.
Rules differ per market and change over time, so treat this as a starting point rather than legal advice.
