When you are allowed to use a Made in USA label

This is the part worth reading before you order, because the standard is stricter than most people expect.

In the United States, an unqualified Made in USA claim is regulated by the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC standard is that the product must be all or virtually all made in the United States. That means final assembly or processing happens here, all significant processing happens here, and all or virtually all ingredients or components are made and sourced here.

What that rules out is the case people most often get wrong: importing finished or nearly finished goods and doing the last step domestically. Assembling imported components in the United States at the end of the process does not normally qualify.

Where a product is largely but not entirely domestic, brands generally use a qualified claim instead, for example naming what was made in the USA rather than claiming the whole product. Those claims have their own rules.

Because the label is centerfold, it is designed to be caught in a seam rather than stitched flat on all four sides.

• Inside a waistband. For trousers, skirts and anything without a neckline.
