Custom care labels printed on soft satin

Custom care labels do two jobs at once. They tell your customer how to wash the garment, and it tells them who made it. Get it wrong and you get returns, faded prints and a garment that looks cheap the first time someone checks the collar.

Our custom care labels are printed on 100% polyester satin using thermal transfer. The ink is fused into the satin surface rather than sitting on top of it, so the text and symbols stay legible through repeated hot washes. Edges are welded closed, not cut, so they do not fray in the drum.

Order custom care labels from 100 pieces for $45. Add your own logo or a QR code, choose sew-in, sew-on or centre fold, and download a free 1:1 PDF proof before anything goes into production.

What has to go on a clothing care label

Most apparel sold at retail in the United States needs more than a wash symbol. Between the FTC Care Labeling Rule and the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act, a compliant garment label typically carries four pieces of information.

Information Why it is on the label What it looks like in practice
Care instructions Required on most textile wearing apparel under the FTC Care Labeling Rule A washing or dry cleaning method, plus a warning where a normal procedure would damage the garment
Fiber content Required under the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act Generic fiber names in order of predominance by weight, with percentages. For example: 80% Cotton, 20% Polyester
Country of origin Required Made in USA, Made in Portugal, Made in Italy
Manufacturer or dealer identity Required A registered RN number, or the full legal business name
Care symbols Permitted in place of written instructions when they follow ASTM D5489 Useful if you sell into more than one market and do not want to fit four languages on one label

Requirements differ outside the United States and they change over time. Treat the table above as a starting point rather than legal advice, and confirm the current rules for every market you sell into before you finalize your artwork.

One requirement is worth calling out because it is the one most often missed: the label has to stay attached and legible for the useful life of the garment. A printed care label that fades after ten washes is not compliant, however correct the wording was on day one. That is the whole reason we print these the way we do.

Why thermal transfer survives the wash

Thermal transfer uses a heated printhead to move pigment from a ribbon onto the satin, where it bonds to the surface. There is no wet ink sitting on top of the weave waiting to crack, and nothing to bleed into neighbouring fabric the first time the garment gets washed with something dark.

In practice that means three things for your customer:

  • No fading. Symbols and fiber content stay readable after repeated washing at high temperature.
  • No bleeding. The print does not migrate into the garment, which matters most on light-colored fabrics.
  • No fraying. Welded edges seal the satin instead of leaving a raw cut that unravels in the drum.

This is the difference between washing labels that still do the job at wash fifty and one that is an illegible grey smear by wash ten.

Choosing between the two sizes

2.4 x 0.8 in (60 x 20 mm). The compact option. Comfortable on lightweight garments, kidswear and accessories where a larger label would be felt against the skin. Fits a row of care symbols plus a short fiber content line.

2.8 x 1.2 in (70 x 30 mm). The working size for most brands. Room for care symbols, fiber content, country of origin and a small logo, or the same information in two languages.

If you choose centre fold, plan your layout around the finished size rather than the flat size. Folding halves the visible height and gives you two printable faces, so a 2.8 x 1.2 in label finishes at roughly 2.8 x 0.6 in per side. Many brands use this deliberately: brand and logo on the front face, care and compliance information on the back.

Adding a QR code is possible and increasingly common, usually pointing to a care guide or a product registration page. Keep it as large as the layout allows and check it on the printed proof at actual size before you commit to a full run. A QR code that scans perfectly on screen can be too small to read once it is printed at 0.4 inches square.

Sew-in, sew-on or centre fold

  • Sew-in. Stitched into a side seam or neck seam so only the printed face is visible. The standard choice for garments with a finished seam.
  • Sew-on. Stitched flat onto the garment on all four sides. Used where there is no seam to hide the label in, and on home textiles.
  • Centre fold. Folded down the middle and stitched into a seam, giving two printed faces and a clean folded edge.

Washing labels are made for stitching rather than heat application. If you need a no-sew option for branding, our custom woven labels are available with heat-seal backing.

Who orders custom care labels

  • Clothing brands that need compliant garment care labels for retail without ordering tens of thousands at a time
  • Handmade sellers and Etsy shops adding fabric content labels to give a homemade product a finished, professional look
  • Kidswear and baby clothing makers who need a soft satin label that will not irritate sensitive skin
  • Activewear and performance lines where technical fabrics carry specific washing restrictions that have to survive frequent laundering
  • Home textile brands labelling bedding, towels and soft goods
  • Uniform and workwear suppliers who need laundry labels that hold up to industrial washing cycles

Not sure which washing symbols you need?

The symbols are standardised, but which ones belong on your specific garment depends on the fabric, the dye and the construction. Our guide to care label symbols explains what each symbol means and how the washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional cleaning families fit together, so you can build the right sequence before you start designing.

FAQ

What is the minimum order for custom care labels?

The minimum is 100 labels. From there you can order any quantity up to 100,000 and beyond, with no upper limit. For very large production runs, request a quote and we will price the run directly.

How much do custom care labels cost?

Pricing for custom care labels starts at $45 for 100 pieces. The per-label price drops as quantity increases, and the full price ladder is visible in the design tool as you change the quantity, so you can see exactly what each tier costs before you order.

What are custom care labels made of?

Wash care labels are printed on 100% polyester satin and are OEKO-TEX certified. Satin is used for garment care labels because, which is OEKO-TEX certified. Satin is used for care labels because it is smooth against the skin and takes fine print cleanly, which matters when you are fitting symbols and fiber percentages into a small space.

Will the print fade or bleed in the wash?

No. Thermal transfer bonds the ink to the satin surface rather than leaving it sitting on top, so the print does not crack, fade or migrate into the fabric. The labels can be washed repeatedly at high temperature without fraying, bleeding or fading.

Can I put my logo on a care label?

Yes. Upload your logo in the design tool and place it alongside your care instructions. Note that care labels print in a single color, either black on white or white on black, so a color logo will be converted to one color. For full-color branding, use woven labels or printed hang tags.

Can I add a QR code to my care label?

Yes. QR codes are commonly used to link to an extended care guide, a warranty page or a product registration form. Make it as large as your layout allows, and scan it from the free 1:1 PDF proof before ordering to confirm it reads reliably at printed size.

What sizes are available?

Two sizes: 2.4 x 0.8 in (60 x 20 mm) and 2.8 x 1.2 in (70 x 30 mm). The smaller size suits lightweight garments and kidswear. The larger size fits care symbols, fiber content, country of origin and a logo together, or the same content in two languages.

Are care labels legally required?

In the United States, most textile wearing apparel sold at retail must carry care instructions, fiber content, country of origin and the identity of the manufacturer or dealer. Requirements vary by market and change over time, so confirm the current rules for every country you sell into.

How long does production take?

Standard production is 8 to 12 business days plus shipping. Rush production runs in 4 to 8 business days plus shipping, available on orders from 1,000 pieces for an additional $85 per design. Production starts once you approve your proof.

Are these labels safe for baby clothes and sensitive skin?

Yes. The satin finish is smooth rather than scratchy, and the material is OEKO-TEX certified, which is why it is widely used in kidswear and babywear. Welded edges also mean there is no rough cut edge to rub against the skin.

How do I attach a care label?

Care labels are stitched, not ironed on. You can sew them into a side seam or neck seam, sew them flat onto the garment, or order them centre folded to stitch into a seam with two visible printed faces.

Can I see the label before I order?

Yes. Every design comes with a free digital PDF proof at scale 1:1. Download it, print it at actual size, and hold it against the garment before you approve production. This is the fastest way to catch text that is too small or a layout that does not fit.
