Custom embroidered keychains and woven key tags

Custom embroidered keychains, also sold as embroidered keyrings or custom fabric keychains, are fabric key tags stitched with your own artwork, made on the same machines as our patches. Super Label Store produces them at 1 x 5 inches, double sided, from 10 pieces per design, with a free 1:1 proof before you order.
A custom fabric keychain is the one piece of merchandise that stays with someone. A t-shirt goes in a drawer and a sticker comes off a laptop, but keys get carried every day for years. That makes a fabric key tag one of the few branded items with a genuinely long working life, and it is why teams, clubs, squadrons and companies keep ordering them.

Ten pieces per design is a real minimum. Most suppliers in this category start at 100 or 250, which is the wrong shape when you are outfitting a crew of twelve.

The format: 1 x 5 inches, and why that shape exists

Every keychain we make is 1 x 5 inches, which you can run portrait or landscape depending on how your artwork sits.

That is not an arbitrary size. A long narrow fabric tag is the classic streamer format used for jet tags, flight tags and remove before flight keychains, and it works for the same reason in every other setting: it is long enough to carry a name or a line of text at readable size, narrow enough to sit flat in a pocket, and visible enough to find a set of keys in a bag.

Both sides are printed. The back mirrors the front, so the tag reads the same whichever way it lands.

Custom jet tags and remove before flight keychains

Super Label Store produces custom jet tags in exactly the format the aviation world uses: a 1 x 5 inch woven or embroidered streamer, double sided, in your own colours and wording.

The remove before flight tag started as a safety streamer on aircraft covers and pitot tubes, and it has since become the standard keychain format across aviation. Flight schools, squadrons, aero clubs, maintenance crews and airline teams all order them, usually for a whole group at once.

Three things worth knowing if that is what you are ordering:

  • Text needs room. A long tag suits a short phrase in large letters far better than a long phrase in small ones. Embroidered lettering needs roughly 3.5 to 4 mm of width per character to stay legible, so plan for one line rather than three.
  • Woven holds more detail. If your squadron patch or club logo has fine linework, order the woven version rather than the embroidered one. More on that below.
  • Order per name, not per person. Each distinct wording is its own design with its own minimum of 10. A group tag in one wording is one order; twelve individual names is twelve orders.

Woven or embroidered keychains?

Both are available on the same product, and the choice comes down to how much detail your design carries.

Embroidered keychains are stitched with thick polyester thread on a twill base, which gives a raised, textured surface with real presence in the hand. Choose from three coverage levels: 100% covers the whole surface with no twill showing, 75% leaves some background visible, and 50% shows the most fabric and costs least. Thread is thick, so text needs about 3.5 to 4 mm of width per character and fine detail rounds off.

Woven keychains use much finer yarn worked into a flat surface. They hold small text, thin outlines and dense artwork at sizes where embroidery turns them into a smudge, and they allow more colours. The trade-off is that a woven tag is flat rather than raised, so it loses the tactile quality that makes an embroidered tag feel substantial.

A simple rule: bold logo, few colors, embroidered. Fine linework, small text or a detailed crest, woven.

Merrow Border or Heat Cut

Heat Cut is usually the better choice on a keychain, and the reason is the size.

A Merrow Border is the classic overlocked embroidered edge, around 5 mm wide, and that width is added around your design. On a tag that is only one inch tall, a 5 mm border on each side takes a meaningful share of the surface you have to work with. It looks right on a wide streamer with a short word, less so on a busy design.

Heat Cut gives a clean sealed edge that follows the outline exactly and takes almost no extra space. On a small format it leaves more room for the artwork, and it is the more premium finish.

You choose the border colour and the background colour yourself in the design tool.

Designing for a 1 x 5 inch tag

The format is generous in one direction and tight in the other, which shapes what works.

  • One line of text, not three. At one inch tall you have room for a single line at readable size. A club name works. A club name plus a founding date plus a motto does not.
  • Bold sans-serif reads best. Thin and serif faces lose their strokes in thread at this scale.
  • Design for the long axis. A round logo on a 1 x 5 tag leaves two large empty areas. Artwork built along the length uses the format instead of fighting it.
  • No gradients, shadows or photographs. Both techniques use solid colors, so anything shaded flattens into blocks. Design flat from the start.
  • Upload a PNG with a transparent background if you want the tag cut to a custom outline rather than a rectangle.

If your brand colors have to be exact, enter your Pantone or other colour codes in the comments field when ordering. Without codes, the Super Label Store design team matches your artwork as closely as the thread range allows.

Two proofs before your run is produced

Digital Proof: check the size

Every design produces a free Digital Proof as a PDF at scale 1:1. Print it on A4, cut it out and hold it in your hand.

On a keychain this catches the thing that matters most: whether your text is still readable at arm's length. A design that looks fine on a monitor is roughly four times larger than the finished tag, and that is where most surprises come from. Two minutes with a printed proof settles it. If your printer scaling is slightly off, adjust the print percentage until the printed tag matches the dimensions shown.

Photo Proof: check the finished tag

The Photo Proof is free and can be ticked during ordering at no extra cost. Super Label Store produces one sample keychain, photographs it, and sends it for approval before the rest of the run starts.

Worth taking on a group order. Adjusting one sample costs nothing; reproducing fifty tags because the club colours came out wrong costs a great deal more.

It does extend the lead time, because production pauses until you respond. Clicking Approve on the approval page sends your approval straight to the production floor, so use that rather than email, which has to be handled by a person first.

We always do our utmost to meet the production time you choose. In exceptional cases production can be delayed by circumstances outside our control. If we miss a rush deadline, the $85 rush fee is refunded.

Ordering for a group

Custom keychains at Super Label Store start at 10 pieces per design, from $130. The unit price drops as the quantity rises.

The important detail is that the minimum applies per design. Ten keychains carrying the same club name is one order. Twelve keychains each carrying a different member's name is twelve designs, so twelve minimums.

For a roster where every tag is different, request a quote rather than working through the configurator and we will price the run directly. Many groups also run both: a shared design at volume, plus individual tags only where they are needed.

Who orders custom embroidered keychains

  • Sports teams and clubs producing kit tags and bag tags for a squad
  • Motorcycle and car clubs where the key tag carries the chapter or club mark
  • Scouting, camps and outdoor groups ordering for a troop or a season
  • Companies and workwear programmes using cloth keychains and fabric keyrings as branded merchandise or as identification on issued keys
  • Breweries, cafes and events producing merchandise with a longer life than a sticker
  • Fashion and streetwear brands adding a fabric key tag to the accessory line

Frequently Asked Questions

What are custom embroidered keychains?

Custom embroidered keychains, also called embroidered keyrings or cloth keychains, are fabric key tags stitched with your own artwork, made on the same machines as embroidered patches. Super Label Store produces them at 1 x 5 inches, double sided, in your own colours and wording, from 10 pieces per design.

What is the minimum order?

Ten keychains per design at Super Label Store. Most suppliers in this category start at 100 or 250, which is impractical when you are outfitting a crew of twelve. The minimum applies per design, so each different wording is its own order.

How much do custom keychains cost?

From $130 for 10 keychains. The unit price falls as the quantity rises, and the design tool updates the figure as you change quantity, coverage and technique.

What size are the keychains?

One size: 1 x 5 inches, which you can run portrait or landscape. That is the classic streamer format used for jet tags and remove before flight keychains, long enough for a line of readable text and narrow enough to sit flat in a pocket.

Do you make custom jet tags and remove before flight keychains?

Yes. The 1 x 5 inch format is exactly what aviation uses, and it is one of the most common orders on this page. Flight schools, squadrons, aero clubs and maintenance crews order them in their own colours and wording, usually for a whole group at once.

What is the difference between woven and embroidered keychains?

Embroidered keychains are stitched with thick thread on twill, giving a raised, textured surface. Woven keychains use much finer yarn worked into a flat surface, which holds small text and fine detail that embroidery cannot. Bold logo, embroidered. Fine linework, woven.

Are the keychains double sided?

Yes. Both sides carry the design and the back mirrors the front, so the tag reads the same whichever way it lands.

Should I choose a Merrow Border or Heat Cut?

Heat Cut, in most cases. A Merrow Border is around 5 mm wide and that width is added around your design, which takes a meaningful share of a tag that is only one inch tall. Heat Cut follows the outline exactly and leaves more room for the artwork.

How much text fits on a keychain?

One line at readable size. Embroidered lettering needs about 3.5 to 4 mm of width per character, so a club name or a short phrase works well and three lines of text does not. Choose the woven version if you need smaller text.

Can I order a different name on each keychain?

Yes, but each name is a separate design carrying its own minimum of 10. For a roster of individual names, request a quote instead of using the configurator. Many groups order a shared design at volume and individual tags only where needed.

How long does production take?

Standard production at Super Label Store is 8 to 12 business days plus shipping, counted from your approval of the proof. Rush production runs in 4 to 8 business days for $85 per design.

Is the Photo Proof free?

Yes. Tick it during ordering at no extra cost and Super Label Store will photograph one real sample keychain for your approval before the rest of the run is produced. It does extend the lead time slightly, because production waits for your response.

Can I see the keychain before I order?

Yes, in two ways. Every design produces a free Digital Proof as a PDF at scale 1:1 that you can print and hold in your hand, and you can also tick the free Photo Proof to see a photograph of a real sample tag before the full run starts.
