It is the same construction as our embroidery patches: polyester thread on a twill base, finished with a Merrow Border or a Heat Cut edge, with a key ring attached. That makes a fabric keychain that bends in a pocket, survives a washing machine and does not chip the way acrylic and enamel do.

The same product goes by a lot of different names, and it is worth knowing they all land here. An embroidered key chain and an embroidered key ring are the same thing spelled two ways. An embroidery keychain, a fabric keychain, a cloth keychain and a woven keychain are the same thing described by its process or its material. A keychain patch or a patch keychain is what people call it when the design started life as a patch. The original comes from aviation ground crew. Protective covers, pins and locks fitted to an aircraft on the ground carry a bright streamer so nothing gets left in place before take off. The phrase is deliberately impossible to miss, which is exactly why it works as a keychain: you notice it in a pocket, in a bag and on a hook by the door.

Single sided or double sided

Double sided is the option most people want once they hear it exists, and it is what turns a keychain into something useful rather than decorative. Put the message on the front and the information on the back.

How that plays out in practice:

• Remove before flight on one side, your unit or brand on the other. The phrase does the talking, your name does the identifying.
• Logo front, contact details back. A promotional keychain that is still worth something to whoever finds your keys.

Sizes and custom shapes

The standard embroidered keychain is 5 x 1 inch (127 x 25 mm), which is the traditional remove before flight proportion and the size that reads best as a streamer. It holds roughly twenty to twenty five characters on one line at a legible stitch size.

Custom shapes are available for anything that is not a rectangle: a shield for a unit crest, a circle for a logo mark, a wing, a tool outline, the shape of your own brand mark. A Heat Cut edge follows the outline of your artwork exactly, which is what makes irregular shapes possible. Merrow Border suits simple outlines and adds roughly 5 mm of finished edge around your design, so factor that in.

Text below about 4 mm in height starts to lose definition in thread, so a long name on a small shape usually wants either a wider tag or fewer words.

Promotional and branded keychains from 10 pieces
