Custom woven patches: when embroidery is too coarse
Custom woven patches are made by weaving fine coloured threads into a flat surface rather than stitching thick thread on top of a base. The result is thinner, smoother and far more detailed than embroidery, and it is the right choice for a specific kind of artwork.
The difference matters more than it sounds. Embroidery thread is thick, so it needs roughly 3.5 to 4 mm of width to render a legible character and it rounds off anything finer than about a millimetre. Weaving uses much finer yarn, which means small text, thin outlines and dense detail survive at sizes where embroidery turns them into a smudge. The trade-off is that a woven patch is flat rather than raised, so it loses the tactile, textured quality that makes an embroidered patch feel substantial in the hand.

Inspiring woven patches and badges
Woven or embroidered? Decide from your artwork
Embroidery lays thick thread on top of a twill base. Weaving works much finer thread into the fabric itself. Every other difference follows from that one.
Choose woven when your design carries small text, thin outlines or fine linework. A woven patch is thin, flat and smooth, and it holds detail that embroidery rounds off. The result reads sharp and modern rather than traditional, and it sits flatter on the garment.
Choose embroidered when your design is a bold logo, a piece of heraldry or a statement piece. An embroidered patch is thick, raised and textured, with a classic premium feel in the hand. Text needs 3.5 to 4 mm of width per character, so it suits fewer and larger elements.
Identical either way: up to 9 thread colors with 15 as the maximum, any shape from 1.5 to 9 inches, all seven backings, a minimum of 10 pieces per design and the same 8 to 12 business day production. Super Label Store makes both on the same order process.
Neither can reproduce gradients, shadows or photographs. Both build the image from solid threads laid side by side, so anything shaded flattens into blocks of colour. If your artwork has a gradient in it, simplify it before you order rather than after you see the proof.
Three questions that settle it
1. Does your design have small text or fine lines? If yes, woven. Embroidered lettering needs about 3.5 to 4 mm of width per character, so a detailed logo with a tagline underneath will fill in and become unreadable in thread.
2. Is the patch under about 2.5 inches? If yes, woven is usually better. The smaller the patch, the more the thickness of embroidery thread works against you.
3. Do you want the patch to be felt as well as seen? If yes, embroidered. The raised texture is the point, and it is what makes a patch read as premium on a jacket or a cap. A woven patch is deliberately understated.
A simple rule: if your artwork is essentially a detailed logo, choose woven. If it is a bold graphic or a statement piece, choose embroidered.

Designing a woven patch
Super Label Store weaves patches in any shape from 1.5 to 9 inches, with the same Heat Cut and Merrow Border options as embroidered patches.
Woven patches handle far more than embroidery, but they are not unlimited. Three things still apply:
- Gradients and shadows are not possible. Weaving places solid colours next to each other, so a fade becomes a hard edge between two colours. This is the same limit embroidery has, and it surprises people who assume the finer thread means more freedom.
- Photographs cannot be woven. They have to be redrawn as a simplified illustration first.
- Very fine hairlines still have a floor. Woven holds far more detail than embroidery, but a line thinner than a single thread cannot exist.
For a patch cut to the shape of your design rather than a rectangle, upload a PNG with a transparent background. A file with a white or colored background is usually read as a square. If brand colors have to be exact, enter your Pantone or other colour codes in the comments field. Without codes, the Super Label Store design team matches your artwork as closely as the thread range allows.
Backings: the same seven options
A woven patch takes exactly the same backings as an embroidered one, so the choice is about how it attaches rather than how it is made.
- Sew-on. The most durable option and the standard for anything washed regularly or worn hard.
- Iron-on. Heat-activated backing applied with a household iron. Suits flat cotton, denim and canvas, not stretch knits or technical fabrics.
- Single velcro. Hook backing for gear that already carries loop panels.
- Double velcro. Hook plus a separate loop piece, for garments and gear without a panel.
- 3M adhesive. Peel and stick, best on hard surfaces rather than garments.
- Plastic backing. Stiffens the patch so it holds its shape rather than following the fabric.
- Keychain. Turns the patch into a standalone product.
One thing worth knowing: a woven patch is thinner and more flexible than an embroidered one, which makes it sit flatter under an iron-on application and lie better on a curved surface such as a cap panel.

On a woven patch this matters more than usual, because the whole reason to choose woven is fine detail, and fine detail is exactly what disappears if the patch turns out smaller than you pictured.

Worth taking whenever the design is the reason you chose woven. Seeing how your thinnest line and your smallest text actually came out beats reading a specification about it.

A woven patch sits on the outside of a garment; a woven label is sewn inside it. Two different products that get confused constantly, so worth separating.
