Because the label is woven rather than printed, the text is built from colored yarn. A printed label or one written with a fabric pen fades over time; a woven quilt label is still readable thirty years later.
What to put on a quilt label
- Your name and the year. The basics, and the thing most often missed when it is left off.
- Who the quilt is for and the occasion: a wedding, a birth, an anniversary.
- Where it was made.
- A short message, a line of a poem or a dedication.

Woven text needs roughly 0.08 in (2 mm) of width per character. If you want a name, a date and a message on one label, go for a larger size with two or three lines rather than smaller lettering. Quilters often land around 2 x 1.2 in or bigger, precisely because a quilt label carries more text than a garment label.
Washing instructions sit better on a printed care label, which is built for small type and care symbols.

Where and how to attach a quilt label
The standard place is the back of the quilt, in the lower corner, and you stitch the label on after quilting but before the binding goes on. That lets you tuck the top edge of the label under the binding.
- Straight cut label: stitch it down on all four sides, by hand or by machine.
- End fold or Manhattan fold: the edges are already folded under, so you only stitch around the outline. The easiest route to a clean finish.
- Iron-on is available, but on a quilt that gets washed and used, stitching holds better. If you do iron it on, add a few stitches at the corners.
