What are custom woven labels?

Custom woven labels, also called woven tags, are made by weaving colored polyester yarn on a jacquard loom. The design is built from the threads themselves, which is what separates a woven label from a printed one. A printed label carries ink on the surface of the fabric. A woven label is the fabric.

That difference shows up over time. The label outlasts the garment it is attached to, and the colors do not fade through washing, tumble drying or daily wear. Our hot cut edges seal the fabric so the label does not fray.

Every label is OEKO-TEX® 100 certified, and recycled PET yarn is available if you want a lower-impact option without giving up durability.

Custom woven label sizes and placement

Our custom woven tags are made to your dimensions rather than sold in fixed formats. There are no fixed formats to choose from, so the woven label size follows the garment rather than the other way around.

Where the label goes usually determines the size:

These are the sizes we ship most often, not fixed options. Any dimension between 0.4 x 0.4 inch and 11.8 x 11.8 inch is possible.

All sizes above are finished sizes, meaning the visible label once folded. A center fold or end fold label is cut larger before folding, and production allows for that automatically. Order the size you want to see in the garment.

Text weaves cleanly down to approximately 2 mm (0.08 inch) in width. If your design carries more than two lines of text, size up. Text that is too small for the label is the single most common reason a proof comes back for adjustment.

Woven size labels

A size label carries the garment size and nothing else: S, M, L, or a numeric size. Super Label Store weaves them the same way as brand labels, in the same damask, from 5 pieces per design.

Two ways to handle sizing, and the choice affects your order:

• Separate size labels. One small label per size, sewn in alongside the brand label. Each size is its own design and carries its own minimum, so a run of S, M, L and XL is four designs. This is what most brands do once they sell more than one size.
• Size on the brand label. The size is woven into the same label as your logo. One design, one minimum, but a separate version per size, so the count works out the same.

Woven size labels are usually small: 0.5 × 0.5 in to 1 × 0.75 in is the normal range. Text weaves cleanly down to about 2 mm, so a single letter or number reads well at that size. Bold sans-serif works best.

If you are launching a size run, order the free 1:1 proof for the largest and the smallest size in the set, print both, and check them against the garment before you commit.

Damask weaving and thread density

Our custom woven labels use a damask weave. Damask is a tightly woven structure that carries fine detail at small sizes, which is why it has been the standard for premium apparel brands for decades. The tight weave also produces a softer surface against the skin than looser constructions.

We weave in 50, 75 and 100 denier. Denier describes the thickness of the yarn: the finer the yarn, the more threads fit into the same space, and the more detail the label can hold.

Which denier we use depends on your design. A logo with fine lines, small text or intricate detail needs a finer yarn to reproduce cleanly. A simpler wordmark works well at a heavier denier, which produces a slightly firmer label. You do not need to choose this yourself. We select it based on the artwork you upload, and you see the result in the digital proof before production starts.

Fold styles

Colors and design

You can use up to 8 colors in a single design. That is enough for most logos, wordmarks and icons.

If your artwork has more colors, gradients or photographic detail, we will tell you before production and suggest how to simplify it, or point you towards printed labels where full-color detail is possible.

Accepted file formats

We accept almost all common file formats, including JPG, PNG, AI, PSD, INDD and PDF. For the fastest upload, JPG or PNG work best. Larger files such as AI, Photoshop, InDesign and PDF documents take longer to upload but are handled the same way.

Common reasons a proof needs adjusting:

• Text is too small — fine details below approximately 1.5 to 2 mm cannot be woven clearly.
• Low color contrast — some combinations are hard to read, for example gold thread on a pink background.
• Too many small details — fine detail often needs to be simplified before it can be woven.
• Photos cannot be woven — images have to be converted into a simple graphic or illustration first.
• No gradients or shadows — woven labels use solid thread colors only, so color fades and shading are not possible.
• The label needs to be larger — if the design carries a lot of text or detail, a bigger label is often the fix.
• Unsuitable font — serif fonts and very thin lettering do not weave well. Sans-serif or bold fonts give the best results.

Two ways to check your labels before production

Super Label Store offers two separate checks, and they answer different questions. Knowing which you need saves a reorder.

Digital Proof: free, and it checks the size

Every woven label design produces a free Digital Proof as a PDF at scale 1:1, available under the order button. Download it, print it on A4, cut the label out and hold it against the garment. That tells you within two minutes whether 2 x 1 inches is right for your neck label, and whether your text is still readable at that size.

If your printer's scaling is slightly off, adjust the print percentage until the printed label matches the dimensions shown on the proof.

Photo Proof: a paid option on woven labels

The Photo Proof is a paid option on woven labels, and there is a good reason for the surcharge. We weave a single sample label first, photograph it, and send you that photograph. Only once you approve it does the rest of the production run start.

That means an extra setup and an extra production step before your order proper begins, which is what the surcharge covers. Note that the Photo Proof is free on embroidery patches, so do not assume the same applies across the range.

It is worth taking when the design is detailed, when the run is large, or when an exact colour match matters. For a straightforward wordmark at a small quantity, the free Digital Proof is usually enough.

A Photo Proof also extends the lead time, because production waits for your response. Keep an eye on your email during that window.

Approve on the website, not by email

When you click Approve on the approval page, your approval goes straight to the production floor and the looms carry on immediately. Feedback sent by email has to be processed by a member of staff first, which adds a step and delays your order. Use the approval page for both approvals and changes wherever you can.
