Custom morale patches, made to your own artwork

Custom morale patches are embroidered patches carrying a joke, a motto, a symbol or an in-group reference rather than official insignia. Super Label Store produces them in any shape from 1.5 to 9 inches, from 10 pieces per design, usually with hook velcro backing.

They are the one patch category where the patch itself is the product. A unit patch marks a uniform and a hat patch decorates a cap, but a morale patch gets swapped, traded, collected and displayed on its own. That changes what makes a good one, and it changes how you should order.
The category grew out of military units, where the official insignia said who you were on paper and the morale patch said what the team was actually like. It has since spread well beyond that, into fire and EMS crews, airsoft and milsim groups, shooting ranges, outdoor communities and plenty of companies that simply wanted something better than a mug. What carried over is the culture around them: they are made in small runs, they are never quite official, and they are meant to be handed over rather than issued. Almost everything on this page follows from those three things, from why velcro is the default backing to why ten pieces is a sensible order.

Morale patches or tactical patches?

The production is identical. The purpose is not, and it changes what you should design.

Tactical patches identify. Call signs, blood type, team role, flags, unit markers. Function first, sized to the loop panel on a plate carrier. Those are on our custom tactical patches page.

Morale patches express. Humor, mascots, slogans and references only the team gets. Nothing on them has to be official or approved, which is precisely the point. They began in military units as the unofficial counterpart to regulation insignia, and that is still what defines the category.

Most teams that order one end up ordering both, usually on the same velcro system so everything stays interchangeable.

What makes a morale patch work

A morale patch has about one second to land. Someone glances at a plate carrier, a range bag or a patch board and either gets it or does not. Four things separate the ones people want from the ones that sit in a drawer:

  • One idea, not three. The best morale patches carry a single joke, symbol or line. A second thought halves the impact of the first.
  • It has to read at arm's length. If someone has to lean in to work out what it says, it has failed. That is a design constraint before it is a taste question.
  • Short text beats long text. Embroidered lettering needs 3.5 to 4 mm of width per character, so a 3 inch patch holds a few words in bold capitals, not a sentence.
  • Bold shapes beat fine detail. Thread is thick. Heavy outlines and solid colour blocks survive. Hairlines and shading do not.

A useful test: describe your patch out loud in one short sentence. If you cannot, the design is carrying too much.

Before you order: use your own artwork

Morale patches are the category where this comes up most, so worth being direct.

Memes, film and game logos, band marks, corporate logos and other people's patch designs are generally protected by copyright or trademark. Super Label Store produces what you supply, so responsibility for the artwork rests with you. If you did not create it and do not have permission, redraw the idea in your own way rather than reproducing the original.

That is usually the better patch anyway. A design of your own that means something to your specific group beats a copy of something everyone has already seen.

Velcro is the default, and here is why

Almost every morale patch we produce ships with hook velcro backing, for a straightforward reason: a morale patch that cannot come off is not really a morale patch. The point is that it moves between kit, gets swapped, or ends up on a display board.

Three things drive that:

  • They come off. Before an inspection, a formal event, or a wash cycle.
  • They rotate. A different patch for a different day, job or mood.
  • They get traded. Patch trading is a long tradition in military, emergency service and airsoft circles, and a sewn patch cannot take part in it. If you are producing a run specifically to trade, velcro is not optional.

Single velcro gives you hook backing on the patch, for gear that already carries loop panels. Most plate carriers, range bags, tactical caps and packs do.

Double velcro adds a separate loop piece you attach first, which is what you need for a plain jacket, a civilian backpack or a patch display panel you are building yourself.

Sew-on is available and more durable, but it defeats the purpose unless the patch is going somewhere permanent.

Ordering for a group where some gear has loop panels and some does not? Order double. The spare loop piece is simply unused on kit that already has one.

Sizing a morale patch

Super Label Store produces morale patches from 1.5 to 9 inches, but the useful range is narrower than that.

  • 2 x 3 inches. The classic morale patch rectangle. Fits most standard loop panels on plate carriers and range bags.
  • 3 inch circle or square. Good for a symbol or a logo with minimal text.
  • 1 x 4 inch strip. Text only, for a single line or a call sign.
  • 4 to 5 inches. When the artwork carries real detail and needs the room.
  • Under 2 inches. Symbols only. Text at this size stops being readable.

If your gear already has loop panels, measure them first. A patch that overhangs its panel lifts at the corners and eventually catches on something.

Who orders custom morale patches

  • Military, tactical and airsoft teams producing unit humour and event patches alongside official insignia
  • Police, fire and EMS crews ordering shift, station and in-joke patches
  • Ranges, gun shops and training providers making course, qualification and merchandise patches
  • Outdoor, overlanding and adventure groups marking trips, routes and club membership
  • Brands and creators selling patches as merchandise in their own right
  • Collectors and traders producing personal designs specifically to swap

A minimum of 10 makes a personal run practical. Most patch suppliers start at 50 or 100, which is the wrong shape when the patch is a one-off idea for a small group.

Ordering and quantities

Custom morale patches at Super Label Store start at 10 pieces per design, at $97. The unit price falls automatically as quantities rise, and from 100 pieces you can enter your own quantity in increments of 10, so 110, 170 or 250 all work.

That custom quantity option is worth knowing about if you are ordering against a roster or an event headcount rather than a round number. Each design carries its own minimum. Three different jokes is three designs, so three minimums of 10. For a larger set, request a quote and we will price the run directly.

We always do our utmost to meet the production time you choose. In exceptional cases production can be delayed by circumstances outside our control. If we miss a rush deadline, the $85 rush fee is refunded.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are morale patches?

Morale patches are embroidered patches carrying humour, a motto, a symbol or an in-group reference rather than official insignia. They are usually velcro backed so they can be swapped between gear, traded with others or displayed on a patch board.

What is the minimum order for custom morale patches?

The minimum at Super Label Store is 10 patches per design. Most suppliers in this category start at 50 or 100, which is impractical when the design is a one-off idea for a small group.

How much do custom morale patches cost?

Custom morale patches at Super Label Store start at $97 for 10 pieces. Size, quantity, coverage and colour count drive the price, and the design tool updates as you change each option.

What size should a morale patch be?

2 x 3 inches is the classic format and fits most loop panels on plate carriers and range bags. Three inch circles and squares suit symbols. Below 2 inches, use symbols only, because text stops being readable.

Should morale patches have velcro?

Almost always. A morale patch that cannot come off defeats its own purpose. Single velcro if your gear already has loop panels, double velcro if it does not, since that includes a loop piece to attach first.

Can you make a patch of a meme or a film logo?

Only if you own the artwork or have permission. Memes, film and game logos, band marks and other people's patch designs are generally protected, and responsibility for the artwork rests with the person ordering. Redrawing the idea in your own way is usually the better patch anyway.

How much text fits on a morale patch?

Embroidered lettering needs 3.5 to 4 mm of width per character, so a 3 inch patch holds a few words in bold capitals rather than a sentence. If your line will not fit, order a larger patch rather than reducing the type size.

Can I get neon or metallic thread?

Yes. Neon threads and metallic gold and silver are available as premium options at a surcharge. Note in the comments field exactly where you want them applied, since they are used selectively rather than across the whole patch.

Is the Photo Proof free?

Yes, on embroidery patches. Tick it during ordering at no extra cost and we will photograph one real sample patch for approval before the rest of the run is produced. It does extend the lead time slightly, because production waits for your response.

How long does production take?

Standard production at Super Label Store is 8 to 12 business days plus shipping, counted from your approval of the proof rather than from the order date. Rush is 4 to 8 business days for $85 per design, available from 200 pieces.
